So, what is AGA hair loss?
This is another attempt to explain some fairly scientific mumbo-jumbo (similar to my the DHT post) in layman’s terms. As you’ve probably come across the term AGA if you’ve been researching hair loss.
AGA stands for Androgenic Alopecia (or Androgenetic Alopecia, depending on who you talk to). Androgens are male sex hormones and alopecia means ‘hair loss’, so basically, in normal speak, it’s Male Pattern Baldness. So thus, ‘AGA hair loss’, refers to the hair loss from Male Pattern Baldness. Simple huh?!
Ok…but…like what actually is it?
Check out my post on DHT where I explain the process a little more thoroughly. But in a nutshell, what’s happening is testosterone is being converted into DHT (dihydrotestosterone) by an enzyme called Alpha 5 Reductase. DHT is the evil hair killer which shrinks hair follicles and causes Male Pattern Baldness.
Tell me more
Well, it’s by far the most common form of hair loss, and affects as many as 70% of men and 40% of women over the course of their lifetimes. That’s over half the planet! So you’re very very far from being on your own.
In men it’s usually focused above the temples and on the crown of the head. There’s even a scale called the Hamilton-Norwood scale which determines the extent of it:
Oh God! So what can we do to stop it???!!!
Fear not! Help is at hand! I was starting to thin dramatically, as you can see from My Photo Diary page and after some success with Minoxidil. I opted, largely out of laziness (though after extensive research I must say) to try oral Finasteride aka generic propecia, in tandem with Nizoral shampoo which contains Ketoconazole. Check out my reviews for them here which details more about how they work and how effective they were for me.
I couldn’t recommend these products more highly. I was truly starting to freak out and my confidence was at an all time low because of my obvious hair loss (I felt like everyone was looking and talking about it. They weren’t, I’m sure!).
They’re a surprisingly cheap tandem to keep my hair intact and I really truly count my lucky stars that I found them in time!
